DOIREANN Garrihy has revealed the moment she “nearly died” after her fiance Mark Mehigan “blindsided” her with a surprise proposal.
The RTE 2fm host and her best-selling author fiance Mark announced their engagement back in November 2023.
Doireann has finally shared some details about the special moment on her podcast Doireann & Friends.
Speaking to her guest Pamela Joyce, the 32-year-old recalled the chaotic day she experienced before Mark popped the question.
The Irish star told how that morning she had been experiencing chronic period pains before heading in to host her radio show on 2fm.
After the show, Doireann explained that Mark had rang her and explained that his books release date was now being pushed out by a year.
The Dublin woman said: “He was like, ‘Look I’m so stressed about it’ and I just said, ‘Well I’m on my way home, we’ll have a cup of tea and we’ll figure it out and it’s all going to be fine’.”
She continued: “Anyways I hang up the phone and he rings AGAIN 20 minutes later and he says, ‘I just need to go for a walk, I’m so raging’ and I’m like, ‘Mark it’s hailstoning, please stay home, to be honest I just want to get in bed I’m dying with period pains and he goes, ‘I’LL BRING A NEUROFEN!”
Doireann also highlighted that her sister Ailbhe had been involved in the process as she added: “We were planning on going out for dinner with Mark’s family that night, so obviously I had put tan on the night before.
“But Ailbhe had said to him if you are getting engaged she is going to be so enraged if she hasn’t got tan on, so Mark had to sew the seed and make sure I was prepared”
Once Doireann had arrived to meet Mark in Phoenix Park for a walk she described how he looked “stressed out of his mind”.
The Dancing With The Stars host then said: “So we’re walking along and he’s rambling about the publishers and the book and I’m not even listening because of the period pains.
“And then he stops and says, ‘Doireann take your sunglasses off’ and I was like, ‘what?’ and he’s like, ‘just take them off I want to be able to look at you’ and I put the sunglasses up on my head and he GETS DOWN ON ONE KNEE!”
Doireann then hilariously re-told the story of how she “screamed” as he pulled out the ring.
She gushed: “He then puts his hand inside his jacket pocket and I was in such shock that I screamed, ‘Stand up!’ and as he stood up and started proposing to me it all dawned on me and I went, ‘Get back down!’.”
“And then he was back down and his knee was sopping wet from the hailstones. And then he did a whole speech and popped out the ring and I nearly died.”
The TV star described the proposal as “the strangest feeling in the world” as she explained: “It’s a moment in your life where you need to remember every single thing, but you also cannot believe you’re getting engaged so you’re just going ‘is this what it feels like to get engaged? While also trying to take in what their saying.”
The happy pair have been giving fans updates on their wedding plans on social media and Doireann recently told followers that they plan to tie the knot at the end of 2024 in Ireland.
The Dublin star told TV Now: “We’re quite organised, I suppose, and all the fundamentals have been booked.
“Now it’s figuring out the other bits like bridesmaids’ dresses and that kind of thing.”
