WHILE weddings are supposed to be amongst the happiest of occasions for a couples, they can also be rather divisive.

That’s something one bride-to-be found out the hard way when she told her friends and family the one wedding rule she wanted them to follow on her big day – only to be met by backlash.

The listener wrote in to the ‘Betches Brides‘ podcast and host Fallon Carter read out the wedding dilemma to Mila White.

The bride-to-be explained that while her budget may be on the smaller side, she really wants her special day to “look a certain way.”

She continued: “I’m big on aesthetics and having everything look amazing in photos.

“For context, the decor the colour scheme of the wedding will be dark and dual tones with lots and lots of greenery.

They even went so far as to call me inconsiderate for assuming people will buy a new outfit for me to wear to the wedding

“One idea I had was to ask the guests to wear a certain colour/colour palette so everyone coordinates with the decor, venue and us.”

The listener went on to say that while she “immediately loved the idea,” when she brought it up to some of the guests, she was “met with some attitude.”

“Literally none of my friends or family like the idea – like, what?!” she said.

“They even went so far as to call me inconsiderate for assuming people will buy a new outfit for me to wear to the wedding.”

She told how she thought it’d be “cute” having everyone match, but admitted she didn’t realise it’d cause such a “strong reaction.”

The baffled bride-to-be said that even if she continued with the idea she’d feel bad, before asking the hosts what to do.

Sharing her advice, Mila explained that she’s been to over 16 weddings in the past three years so says that as a guest she’s “seen it all.”

“I personally am not a fan of colour-coded dress codes,” she explained.

“Obviously I think it’s appropriate to have formal, black tie, optional cocktail attire…but in the defence of the guest yes, not always do people buy a new outfit.

“I do, but not all people have one.”

She went on to say that there’s also several other factors to consider, such as whether guests are local, have to get a hotel or are they flying, as this affects costs.

Raising another issue, Mila added that: “9/10 times I’ve been to weddings that are colour-coded, not everyone follows the attire…

“I think it’s rude to be like, ‘uncle Charlie you’re not wearing this dual tone colour so you have to sit in the corner.’

“You’re not going to get that achieved unless you have a tiny wedding where you can convey that to like 30 people.”

She concludes by noting that it’s just not worth it from the bride’s she’s seen because they get “frustrated” when not everyone follows that code.

Meanwhile, Fallon didn’t hold back and admitted: “It’s giving a hard ‘no’ from me.”

After pointing out she agrees with everything that Mila has said, she continued: “Generally having attire restrictions or pushing people to wear a certain colour does work better for smaller weddings, just because you can actually see it.

“I would focus on what you can control which is the wedding party attire so what the groomsman are wearing or what the ladies are wearing next to you.”
